Your rig is NOT an off-road vehicle!

If you have inadvertently ended up off the hardtop and are carrying a heavy load, you are probably in trouble.

Late fall frost and snow make roadsides and fields wet and soft turning them into mud traps. If your rig gets stuck in the mud, it can be a real hair puller to get it “unstuck”.

Mud likes to suck in and trap axles from forward or backward movement. When you spin the tires in an attempt to free them, they will only sink the truck further into the mud and make the situation worse. You can try to dig some mud from the front end of the leading wheels and then nudge the rig forward slowly until you gain solid ground, but if that fails you can save yourself a whole lot of effort and back pain buy just calling a professional like Big Rig Towing to get you back on the black top.

This trailer slid off the road loaded with a 40,000 pound packer in the Bearspaw District west of Calgary. Big Rig picked up both the machine and trailer, placed them back on the road and got them back on their way safely and quickly.

Stuck in a rut? Big Rig can help!

The D9 Cat is an awesome 23 feet of earth moving bulldozer. Weighing in at anywhere from 8 to 104 tons, this giant can go almost any were and move almost anything. However, that kind of weight can also sink pretty fast into mud or soft earth if not kept on the move when trying to plow through it.

It isn’t very often you need help to get this Cat out of the mud, but every now and then even the D9 can get in over its head.

Two of our biggest rigs had a hard time getting this cat unstuck and back to work, but with skill and patience we accomplished the goal.

Make sure your load’s secure

The danger in trucking doesn’t always lay with poor road conditions or weather. It can be as simple as just not tying down your load properly.

How many times have you seen a big truck with an even bigger load trying to negotiate around a tight corner looking like it was going to topple over? Or a flat deck with a load wider than the deck and not looking like it was centered? You can tie it down but if it’s not in the right place to begin with you’re going to have problems.

Big Rig Towing lifted this heavy 65,000 pound steel coil from it’s deck after it shifted during transport. Not an easy task to pick it up and transfer it to another trailer.

Why risk it? You want to get to your destination in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner. Know which tie-downs to use and how to safely strap down your load so it does not shift or affect your centre of balance.

Big Rig Towing & Recovery is available 24-7 to service all of your heavy duty towing and recovery requirements. In the event this happens to you Big Rig is here to help. Just get in touch at (866) 398-7444 for immediate service.

Dedicated to the Heavy Duty Towing & Recovery Industry

According to Wikipedia towing is the process of coupling two or more objects together so that they may be pulled by a designated power source or sources, one behind the other. The towing source (lead object) is usually a truck or other motorized land vehicle. The coupling may consist of a chain, rope, bar, integrated platform, or some other means of keeping the two objects together while in motion.

Big Rig Towing specializes in, and are dedicated solely to, the heavy duty towing and recovery industry. What we do is tow heavy trucks, transport trailers, big rigs, transport trucks, 18 wheelers and large equipment. Keep your rig in tip-top shape!

Your rig is your livelihood so it’s critical to keep it in perfect condition and operating at peak efficiency.

It is an expensive piece of equipment so keeping it clean and running smoothly is not only a great responsibility that may take some time and maintenance, but more importantly it’s your best defense to avoid trouble while out on the road. After all, you don’t want to worry about forced downtime and loss of time and income.

A well-maintained and properly functioning rig can help to ensure your safety and the safety of the drivers around you as well as add years to the life of your rig.

Before a long haul it’s important that you take the time to check your oil, inspect your radiator and your brakes, top up your fluids, grease moving parts, check the fuel vent, check your tires and of course, ensure your load is secured.

Keeping the interior clean is especially important especially if you’re “living” or spending long periods of time in it. It’s your home away from home and pride of ownership can make a difference to your comfort, your sleep, your quality of life and peace of mind.

Keeping the exterior clean can mean additional safety by cleaning your mirrors and cleaning your windows. By keeping it waxed and polished you add protection to your rig’s longevity.

Be pro-active! Creating your own preventive maintenance checklist for pre-trip inspection is definitely a great habit to get into to ensure everything runs smoothly ahead of time.

How to Stay Safe When Broken Down

If your broken down and stranded on the shoulder of the road it can be extremely dangerous. Other traffic is the most common cause of collision and other injuries. These days with distracted driving from cell phones, most often, but also tiredness and passenger interference, it only takes a moment for and accident to happen.

If you find yourself broken down in any situation, high traffic or not, be alert. Stay in your vehicle as much as possible. Pulling off onto a side road or an off ramp if think your truck has a mechanical issue is often safer than the shoulder of a highway.

Big Rig Towing makes sure that it’s teams are fully versed with traffic safety and recovery methods when on scene and can provide undivided attention and care when called to a break down or big rig accident.

Can You Tow Anything?
