Calgary Fire Department Training

Last weekend Big Rig Towing did it’s annual training session with the Calgary Fire Department.

These training sessions not only provide valuable lessons for our local Fire Department in the use of heavy recovery equipment like Big Rigs 75 ton rotator but also help keep our teams on the ready for any emergency that may arise with rigs and large equipment on the road.

Can You Tow Anything?

According to Wikipedia towing is the process of coupling one object to another, so that one can be pulled along behind the other. The towing source (lead object) is usually a truck or other motorized land vehicle. The coupling may consist of a chain, rope, bar, integrated platform, or some other means of keeping the two objects together while in motion.

Big Rig Towing often has to make use of its 75 ton rotator to lift overturned trailers and many other heavy objects related to rig accidents.

So, that being said, not just cars and trucks can be towed but almost anything that will move can be towed.

Just remember that not all vehicles are made to tow and the safety considerations of properly towing another vehicle or object cannot be understated.

When in doubt, hire a professional.

Against The Grain

This is not the way to off load grain. Big Rig Towing was called out to separate these tow trucks and handle the clean up of a significant amount of grain spilled in the right hand lane of the highway.

Big Rig Towing is constantly honing their clean up skills and can handle dangerous goods as well as the occasional grain spill.

Eggs Over Easy

You know the old saying, you can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs? Well these guys took it just a bit too far. This rig got just enough of the road to cause it to flip spilling thousands of eggs onto the road side. It’s an easy breakfast day for the local wild life.

Big Rig Towing got the call to help get the rig back on its feet but all the kings horses couldn’t keep the cargo from being spoiled.

Vulcan Heavy Recovery Mission

No, the Big Rig Towing crew did not just hop some intergalactic flight to tow an Andromeda class star ship off some rocky outcropping on the mysterious planet Vulcan.

In reality they were in the small town of Vulcan, Alberta assisting the local fire department with heavy recovery exercises.

This is an ongoing training program that not only keeps the crews at Big Rig practiced up for those occasions when heavy lifting is required but it also performs a community service for fire departments around Alberta.

Here’s One to Cry About

This beautiful four day old rig slid into a ditch with it’s load of plywood. Maybe it was because it was only four days old when this happened and it still didn’t have it’s driving legs under it.

Big Rig Towing to the rescue. The rig was pulled out and sent to the shop for repair. We’re all hoping to see you back on the road soon.

Heavy Extrication Training Symposium

On October 22 & 23, 2016 the Alberta Vehicle Extrication Association instructors hosted heavy extrication training for the members of the Canada Task Force 2.

This 2 day theory and hands on course was designed to allow students to think outside the box, apply their skill and knowledge to real world extrication situations when dealing with large scale truck and trailers, bridge collapse incidents etc.

Assisting in the program was Big Rig Towing.

The students worked hand in hand with the tow operators to carefully extract patients from inside the crushed vehicles in these extremely precarious scenarios.

By the end of the course many students were at the helm working the controls of Big Rig Towing’s heavy wreckers under the watchful eye of the company’s owner Rick Paley

Fire Fighter Training

Fire fighters don’t just show up with all the skills needed to engage in every situation. That’s because they don’t just fight fires. Firemen are called out to many different events like brush fires, structure fires, automobile accidents, life-threatening medical emergencies, non-life-threatening medical calls, false alarms and other hazardous situations. To be able to do this they have to have extensive training for all these emergencies.

One of the most stressful is automobile accidents that often involve victims trapped by crushed metal or other vehicles.

How do they prepare for this? Big Rig Towing lends a hand with the ongoing training of firemen and their own crews by helping to set up scenarios that accurately represent these types of accidents under controlled environments at one of the Calgary Fire Department’s training centers.
