A look back at some great tips for a healthy lifestyle while on the road

If your occupation equates to life on the road, especially long-hauls, it can be challenging from diet and sleep habits, to finding ways to live a healthy lifestyle mentally, physically and emotionally. Here are 5 valuable tips key to living a balanced life:

1. Make a concerted effort to eat more nutritious meals and snacks. They can make a difference to your energy levels and overall health. Try to avoid fast food as part of your staple diet. Don’t skip breakfast – it’s still considered the most nutritious meal of the day! When stopping for meals, try to order fresh items from the menu. Packing healthy snacks such as protein bars, fruit, veggies, consuming less refined sugars and drinking lots of water (will keep you hydrated and will make you feel better while on the road) are all key. Listen to your body’s cues for hunger and fullness and thirst.

2. Make sure to move your body! Sitting for hours can be hard on your health. No matter how tired from staring at the white line for hours at a time, creating a healthier routine for yourself will energize you. Simple exercise is important so go for a walk or a jog and even invest in a small pair of dumbbells to use while on the road. By engaging in these activities consistently they can help with both physical and mental health by improving circulation, strengthening muscles, and de-stressing your mind.

3. Get good restorative sleep. Keeping a regular sleep schedule can be difficult while on the road. Sleep deprivation can not only leave you cranky, groggy and listless, not being wide awake on the road can be a safety issue. Try to consistently get adequate sleep so that you’re well rested and energized while on the road. Your physical strength and mental alertness depend on the quantity and quality of your sleep.

4. Stay connected to family and friends. Long hours alone on the road can make you feel lonely and disconnected from family and friends and your regular routine. Fortunately, technology is helpful in keeping you connected. Cell phones and options like Facetime and Skype can keep you closer and in more frequent contact with loved ones by calling or messaging. Reaching out to those you’re closest with as often as possible will help to keep your relationships strong.

A Look Back

Phew – sometimes we just get lucky! This rig used up lottery luck when it ended up hanging from an overpass near Lake Louise. Fortunately no one was injured and flying debris from the trailer missed a passing freight train.

Big Rig Towing was called to the scene and was able to haul the damaged rig, using it’s seventy-five ton rotator, back onto the highway so it could be loaded onto a flat deck and returned to Calgary.

If you find yourself in a scary, precarious or disabled situation, or have a piece of heavy equipment to haul, give Big Rig Towing a shout at 1 (866) 398-7444. We’re available 24/7 for all your heavy duty towing and recovery needs.

Forklift Transport

Big Rig Towing not only rescues broken down rigs, but as heavy haulers, we have the heavy duty towing equipment to haul just about anything. In this case, our client had to relocate a forklift. The average forklift can weigh between 1800 to 4500 kg — just too big and heavy for a normal tow truck.

Transporting a forklift needs to be done safely & efficiently. It must be secured properly to the flatbed of the truck with wheels secured so it doesn’t tilt or even fall off the bed. This is important to keep the forklift from damage, but more importantly, securing the forklift properly protects the vehicle driver and any surrounding persons/vehicles during on-load, transport, and off-load.

Big Rig Towing has a solid reputation for doing heavy lifting and moving. We work with highly qualified and certified technicians who are reliable and experienced.

If you find yourself in a disabled situation or have a piece of heavy equipment to haul, give Big Rig Towing a shout. Call 1 (866) 398-7444. We’re available 24/7 for all your heavy duty towing and recovery requirements.

Driving in snow & on ice is serious business

Winter weather elements can be a challenge to negotiate out on the highway and can cause harrowing risks.

Ice is particularly dangerous precisely because it’s hard to detect in advance and ice-covered roads make driving much more dangerous. These pictures are from a recovery west of Hwy 40 up by Burnt Timber. The road was pure ice. Make sure you know when it’s time to get off the road!

Be proactive and take note of Big Rig’s toll free number (866) 398-7444. You may not be in a precarious position today but with many winter months ahead you can never be too pro-active. We’re available 24/7 to service all of your heavy duty towing and recovery requirements anytime, anywhere.

Make sure your load is secure!

The danger in trucking isn’t always with sketchy weather or poor road conditions. It can be as simple as just not tying down your load properly.

How many times have you seen a big truck with an even bigger load trying to negotiate around a tight corner looking like it was going to topple over? Or a flat deck with a load wider than the deck and not looking like it was centered? You can tie it down but if it’s not in the right place to begin with you’re going to have issues.

Big Rig Towing lifted this heavy 65,000 pound steel coil from it’s deck after it shifted during transport. Not an easy task to pick it up and transfer it to another trailer, but having state-of-the-art equipment makes a huge difference.

So why risk it? Know which tie-downs to use and how to safely strap down your load so it does not shift or affect your centre of balance.

In the event this happens to you Big Rig is here to help. Just call toll free 1 (866) 398-7444 for 24/7 service.
