Have you double checked to see if your load’s secure?

The danger in trucking isn’t always with poor road conditions or weather. It can be as simple as just not tying down your load properly.

How many times have you seen a big truck with an even bigger load trying to negotiate around a tight corner looking like it was going to topple over? Or a flat deck with a load wider than the deck and not looking like it was centered? You can tie it down but if it’s not in the right place to begin with you’re going to have issues.

Big Rig Towing lifted this heavy 65,000 pound steel coil from it’s deck after it shifted during transport. Not an easy task to pick it up and transfer it to another trailer, but having state-of-the-art equipment makes a huge difference.

So why risk it? Know which tie-downs to use and how to safely strap down your load so it does not shift or affect your centre of balance.

In the event this happens to you Big Rig is here to help. Just call toll free 1 (866) 398-7444 for 24/7 service.

An expert 75-ton rotator operator can make all the difference

A tow truck rotator is essentially a big crane mounted to the deck of the tow truck. It can be used for everything from:

  • lifting heavy machinery that has tumbled from the back of a rig
  • lifting a load that has flipped over
  • removing a load from a rig that needs less weight so it can be towed
  • lifting heavy equipment from one place to another
  • assisting in transferring cargo from one rig to another
  • And so much more…

Big Rig Towing has a number of rotator tow trucks and can boast that they have the only 75-ton rotator in southern Alberta. An expert rotator operator can make all the difference in getting your towing situation resolved quickly and safely.

We pull our fair share of hapless rigs and heavy equipment from any number of situations.

Crane Rescue

Fog and trains don’t mix when it comes to railway crossings and vehicles of any size

Fog related accidents usually result in head-on and rear-end collisions, two of the most common fog-related incidents. A recent study showed that more instances of fog-related crashes occurred in the early morning hours from December to February.

This rig ran amiss of a freight train in the fog and became one of many like incidents that occur across the country in poor driving conditions.

Fortunately the driver was not injured and Big Rig Towing was able to use their 75-ton rotator to clear the wreckage and get the train on its way and the driver to safety.

42,000 lbs of apples in the creek!

As Canadians we all know that winter weather can be a challenge to negotiate out on the highway. Sometimes it is almost impossible to see where the road ends and the ditch begins.

This truck went off the road and into the field and stopped without issue except that it was close to the edge of the creek. When the truck came to a full stop the weight of the load caused an imbalance, the bank of the creek collapsed, and over went 42,000 lbs of delicious apples!

You may not be in a precarious position today, but why not be proactive and take note of Big Rig’s toll free number (866) 398-7444.  Anytime, anywhere, we’re available 24/7 to service all of your heavy duty towing and recovery requirements.

Miracle that there were only minor injuries

In the middle of these two tractor trailers is a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Initially one truck side-swiped another causing it to hit a passenger vehicle. Other traffic stopped to act as traffic control and to advise oncoming drivers of the accident. They had a vehicle parked some distance from the original scene. A third tractor trailer travelling at a high rate of speed, hit not only the Dodge Ram parked off the side of the road, but the three vehicles in the original accident. You can see the end result. Unbelievably and thankfully there were only minor injuries.

When to Use a Sand Wedge

Positioning a load is critical. Too much weight on one side or the other can have catastrophic consequences.

This truck hauling sand had its hydraulics literally pulled out from under it when the sand shifted causing the dump bed to twist away from the frame and turn the trailer over. Big Rig Towing made quick work righting and getting the broken pieces back to the shop for repair.

We have a number of rotator tow trucks and can boast that we have the only 75-ton rotator in southern Alberta. An expert rotator operator can make all the difference in getting your towing situation resolved quickly and safely.
