Training Days

At Big Rig Towing going about out daily business just isn’t enough. Updating equipment and the constant training to use that equipment is what makes out team the best.

Many accident and towing scenarios can occur on our streets and highways and we like to think we are prepared for all of them. With that in mind our team spends many day of the year rehearsing for these incidents.

When Big Rig Towing shows up at an accident or any kind of event that requires expert towing help we already understand what is needed to handle the problem safely and quickly.

In Deep

It’s not always about how far in the ditch the rig is that makes a recovery hard, sometimes it’s the load.

This load of lumber when into the ditch during Calgary’s recent late summer snow storms with 80000 lbs on board.

Big Rig Towing spent the best part of the afternoon unloading and hauling the cargo before they could get the rig out of the mud and back on dry pavement.

Flood Damage

Not all towing is confined to broken down or rolled rigs. Sometimes heavy equipment has been damaged and needs the towing power of a big diesel to move it.

Last year’s floods in Calgary not only caused millions of dollars in personal and commercial damage but many vehicles were destroyed as well.

Some of these machines are still in need of rescue and transport a year later.
This earth mover was caught by rising water and suffered catastrophic engine damage.

There is only one way to move something this big.

Big Rig Towing brought in the heavy crane and got it safely stored on this trailer for transport.

Dangerous Roll Over

Roll overs are always tricky. Even more so when there is dangerous goods involved.

This roll over was no exception. Loaded with crude oil this tanker took some creative thinking on the part of our Big Rig Towing team to recover.

At the end of the day no one was hurt and the tanker was hauled off to the yard for investigation and repair.

Spring Forward

With recent warming of the weather we quickly forget how bitterly cold, snowy and windy it was this year.

The severity of the weather across Canada resulted in thousands of traffic accidents and hundreds of thousands of dollars in insurance claims and damages.

Here is a brief recap of some the rig recoveries we made at Big Rig Towing this year.

The Long & Winding Road

Wine RevoveryEveryone would like to have a wine cellar but 200 feet down is a long way to go to get a glass of your favourite merlot.

When a rig load of wine went off the highway in slippery conditions carrying a full load of bonded wine, it left the crew at Big Rig Towing a particularly interesting challenge.

First a recovery truck was winched down to the site to off load the liquid cargo. Then, some of the locals were engaged to help with the move.

All in all a full day’s work by the time the rig was recovered.

Time to put the feet up in front of a fire with a favourite glass of the grape.

Propane Roll Over

Propane RecoveryWith any propane recovery and tow the first thing that has to happen is the propane has to be recovered and safely moved from the site.

This fully loaded Super B of propane rolled over near Rimbey on highway 771. While no one was injured in the incident, it took one of Big Rig Towing’s rotators and a 50 ton tow truck to right the rig and move it safely from the area.

To see the how propane can react in one of these situations see the video.

Stick in the Mud

You might think just because you have a four wheel drive that you are invincible in the winter. You might think that because you rig weighs twenty to thirty five thousand bounds that you can’t get stuck in heavy snow. You might even think that if you are driving a vehicle with tank treads like a bulldozer, that nothing will get in your way or stop you from moving forward in unfavorable conditions.

Not true.

This bulldozer operator had just enough confidence in his vehicle to get it stuck nice and deep.

Lucky for him Big Rig Towing had a solution and got him out of a sticky situation.
