Yikes – the Slider!

I don’t care what anybody says, when 70,000 pounds starts to slide sideways and is out of control, RUN!!

This heavy piece of equipment was being loaded onto a trailer when it decided to get a little gnarly. Big Rig Towing used its heavy crane to hoist it back into position and kept it stable until it could be fully loaded and tied down.

Moving heavy equipment is a job for the professionals. When they say don’t try this at home they mean don’t try this at all if you don’t know what you’re doing!

Big Rig Towing and Recovery

Have a job for a rotator crane?!

There are some big jobs that you wouldn’t think would be a part of your company mandate. But that’s the great thing about Big Rig Towing – they have the philosophy that, where there’s a will there’s a way.

A Snowcoach is a specialized passenger transport vehicle, designed with multiple sets of very large low pressure tires or snow tracks to operate over snow +/or ice. These vehicles can seat as many as ten or more passengers and are often used for sightseeing tours or for over-snow transportation, for example, for tours of the Columbia icefields in Banff National Park. Obviously it’s critical they’re in tip-top condition.

This particular snowcoach was in need of a complete overhaul and Big Rig used their rotator crane to lift the body off the chassis so both could be rebuilt and put back into service.

Call Big Rig Towing & Recovery in an emergency!

There really isn’t much you can do when your trailer literally rips in half. You just HAVE to call for a tow and start picking up the pieces.

This truck had 80,000 lbs of potatoes on it when it broke in half. The contents were laboriously loaded onto another trailer for delivery before the two halves could be craned from the scene by Big Rig Towing.

This scene reminded me of an old Harry Chapin song involving Scranton, Pennsylvania and another load of ill-fated goods. I think in that case it was bananas!

Big Rig Towing to the rescue!

Not all Big Rig Towing jobs are the recovery of crashed or stuck rigs. Sometimes it’s as simple as a big, heavy snowfall.

When a parked rig has a large amount of snow on its roof it can’t just take off down the road. If the truck gets up to speed and a few hundred pounds of snow comes flying off, it could cause damage to the vehicles following, or worse, send a trailing vehicle into an oncoming lane. Definitely not a good situation.

Not all solutions have to be complicated hookups or rotator coordinated events either. This snow removal campaign was remedied by hooking up a volunteer shoveller to the rotator and hoisting them on top of the rig to get rid of its snowy burden.

Keep Big Rig’s number – 1 (866) 398-7444 – on hand and call for IMMEDIATE 24/7 service if you find yourself in an emergency situation!

Cold Weather Rescue

It’s only a matter of time before winter rolls in to stay for awhile and as Canadians we all know that winter weather can be a challenge to negotiate out on the highway.

Sometimes it is almost impossible to see where the road ends and the ditch begins. Add blowing snow to the mix and the situation can get pretty sketchy in a split second. Under extreme conditions it is a testament to the drivers of big rigs that more don’t end up in the ditch.

When temperatures go below -30 ending up in the ditch, whether its day or night, presents a whole new set of problems. Not just for the driver of the rig, but for the tow truck operators as well. Keeping warm and safe while working with thousands of pounds of frozen steel is a difficult process. Because the human body is mostly made up of water and we know that water freezes at -32C, getting stuck in the ditch on a -40 night becomes more of a rescue than a tow.
